The Bros. Landreth with Begonia

The Bros. Landreth

For the second night in a row we were dropping down to the basement of Oran Mor for the latest gig on our #AtoZMusicalTour

The Bros. Landreth had been recommended by my good lady’s Canadian nephew, and we didn’t want to disappoint by not seeing them when next in Glasgow.

There have been more than a few occasions when nostalgia has been to the fore at the gigs we’ve attended in the past couple of years and in many ways this was quite similar given the musical reference points to The Eagles, The Allman Brothers and Jackson Browne throughout the set.

Thinking back two Joe’s came to the fore. Younger brother Joe Landreth on lead guitar, comfortably moving the songs from a country/folk perspective to MOR rock, similar to Joe Walsh when he joined The Eagles. A fine guitarist given the canvas to display his musical expertise.

With older brother David on bass, they certainly provided the lush harmonies that epitomised the bands of the 70s mentioned above.

Looking across the audience they’ve also managed to harness a fanbase that’s in tune with the music they record and play.

Travelling from Canada to gig in Glasgow and beyond no doubt comes with a number of risks and the band mitigated at least one the had control over by having fellow Canadian singer songwriter and collaborator Begonia open up for them.

She is certainly no shrinking violet when she’s on stage, with a strong personality and vocal chords to match.

Her songs are partly inspired by the ups and downs of daily life with some humour added to keep things ticking over.

Once seen and heard she’s hard to forget and, in a collaborative extra, joined The Bros Landreth on stage to add vocals to one of their final numbers.

Another night out. A time to hark back to the 70s when punk, post punk and new wave were usurping many of the traditional routes to musical prominence.

The audience though were enthralled by what The Bros Landreth and Begonia had to offer.

It just confirms that we all have different reference points which define our musical tastes. Maybe I just have to get out more!! 😉
