My thoughts on …….. Chaos & Calypso
I can certainly hear the ‘chaos’ emerging from the tracks on John J Presley’s most recent album.
It’s got the blues. It’s infused with jazz. The guitar solos screech out at you like a racket of banshees (I had to look up that collective noun!). The hoarse vocals almost dare you to listen alone in a darkened room.
There are lighter moments with a tip of the hat to Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue, with Laura-Mary Carter taking on the female lead during Sinnerman. In the main though John leads us though a story line of hope fear.
However, it’s the blues that drive this album through to the end.
As to the feeling of Calypso? maybe I just didn’t look hard enough.
The album’s 9 tracks come in at just over 31 minutes and it’s certainly not a half hour you would want back. In fact it’s 31 minutes you might just want to listen to again and again.
Did I enjoy listening to it. Yes, definitely. Will John replicate the energy that come out of the earplugs when we see him in Hamburg?
We hope so. Watch this space.
